A Radio controlled car and remote controlled car is called a RC car which a kind of toy for fun. However, some RC hobbyists take their fun very seriously indeed. They want their RC car to be the most realistic or the fastest by tweaking the basic kit and by tuning up the engine. This is not a new phenomenon at all. Hobbyists have been building and racing model cars since the 1940's. However, these early cars were constrained by technology.

In the early days of the hobby, the models had to be manufactured by hand by hobbyists and radio control was ineffective and too dear for home use. Those early RC cars were controlled remotely by wire. After the hobby or sport had been opened up by real radio control, it became more exciting and it attracted more hobbyists and with them came improvement and commercial interest. This means that the technology involved in RC car has come on in leaps and bounds. One aspect worth mentioning here is that RC car used to be whether they were remote controlled or radio controlled. They are both shortened to RC and so the terms are often used arbitrarily these days. Now radio controlled toys are more and more popular with kids and even adults.

The most popular RC car for beginners is the electrically driven model car. Electric RC car has to rely on rechargeable batteries for power. This is their main disadvantage, but being electrically driven also means that the RC car is cleaner and more responsive to control. Electrically driven cars are apt to be lighter and therefore faster. They are cleaner because there is no exhaust. They are easier to maintain, but also less easy to modify. They accelerate extremely quickly

The next step for many RC hobbyists is the Nitro car. Nitro cars are driven by miniature engines which run on a mixture of nitromethane and lubricating oil. These cars are very fast with a fast acceleration. They can reach and maintain higher speeds than electric cars, whose batteries are constantly running down which means less power for speed.

Nitro cars are noisy and smelly. They make the loud whine that people associate with model racing, but they also produce exhaust which means that they cannot be used indoors.

More and more replica cars are now using petroleum powered RC cars. These replicas tend to be the bigger ones. The RC car has engine that are more familiar to the non-specialist, but they have all the characteristics of an typical car. They produce fumes, noise and are slower to accelerate that the other kinds. However, petrol driven engines will last longer than nitro engines. Because these models are larger, they can take more fuel on board and so go longer distances.

All three of the above types can then be on-road or off-road. On-road cars will be built for racing only and the tires will be racing tires and the engines will be finely tuned to reach top speed quickly and maintain it for the duration of the race. On the other hand, off-road RC car are built for travelling up and down hill over all kinds of natural objects, so the engine has to have more torque and the tires have to be able to maintain a good grip. These cars are usually slower.

The last distinguishing attribute of the different RC car is size or more precisely the scale. 1:8 was and still is quite popular. That scale means that for every eight inches of the real car, the model is one inch long. Other popular sizes are 1:10 and 1:12, but there is a new breed of RC car gaining popularity, the monster 1:5 cars, which are petrol powered.

]]> 5 Reasons To Give Your Kids Plastic Model Cars

Why let someone else build your toys when the toy is building plastic model cars? By putting the models together you are learning and teaching your children five valuable life skills. These models are popular for a reason.

1) A chance to build something

Building something requires patience and skill. As you put together more models you will get better and better. The models are all sorted by difficulty levels. If you are just starting out you may not want to start on the one with the working internal combustion engine or a 1000 parts, you may want to start simpler. There are simple models that you can snap together and put on the decals. No glue required. Once you get used to the process you can move on models that need glue to be put together. You can also add more parts, decals and paint. By building something new you gain a sense of adventure as you never know how it will end up.

2) A chance to be creative

Just because the picture on the box shows the paint job to be a certain way who says that your car has to look like that? Have you ever wanted to get a Porsche with flames on it? Or shark teeth? Now you can make your very own flaming shark Porsche. Every racing team has their own color scheme and decorations. You could design the colors and designs for your very own racing team and build an entire stable of race cars.

3) A chance to have pride in your craftsmanship

As you build more models your skill level gets better and you can build more complex models. Completing a difficult model is a source of pride and makes you feel great. The time it takes it part of the joy.

4) A chance to race them

Depending on the types of models you have built you might be able to race them against your friends. In order to race them you are going to need gravity or a working motor that comes as part of the set. By racing them you can learn about power and what it takes to make a car go faster. Does it more or less weight? Does the rear spoiler speed you up or slow you down? Now is your chance to find out.

5) A chance to display them

You will be very proud of what you have created a no doubt want to show them off to the world. By putting your best work on display you invite others to see what you have created. No doubt they will be very impressed by what you have created and ask how you got to be so good at building models.

By building plastic model cars you have a chance to have a lot of fun and learn something at the same time. There are many people building them and a lot of models to choose from. You are sure to find your new favorite car available as a model.

Question by e: Which make and model of car offers the least transmission problems?
I'm planning on buying a new car and I've read a few TSB's and I'd like to know everyone's opinions on which year/make/model car gives the least transmission problem.

Please don't answer if you feel your car is the best just because you haven't had a problem yet. Only people with real knowledge of cars reply.

Hondas are pretty lousy, the Fords and Mazda FWD cars are also pretty crummy, the smaller GM cars are bad as are most 4L60E's, Chryslers are bad though better over time...

Doesn't leave a lot of potentially good cars, in retrospect, when trying to dodge troublemakers.
