A Simplified Explanation of Model Train Scale

If you are new to the fascinating world of replica trains the terms model train scale and gauge may be confusing, at times they almost seem interchangeable. What follows though, is a simplified explanation of replica trains and their scales and gauges (referring to track size) to help unravel this confusing terminology.

Model trains can lead a child to explore the outermost realms of fantasy or experience the lumbering behemoths of the past, or they can provide a creative outlet for the adult. Part of the allure of these beautiful replicas is that these monster machines are miniaturized to sizes that can fit into a playroom, hobby room or garden area. To that end, certain standards called scales are used to recreate the locomotives as realistically as possible but with a much smaller size. Gauges for replicas refer to the track and the distances separating the load bearing rails. On models, these of course are much smaller and correlate to the scale of the real train. It is impossible to detail every single model train scale because in the beginning each manufacturer and modeler followed their own ideas, only in the last 100 or so years have model scales been more standardized in part due to the efforts of a dedicated few enthusiasts and a major toy train manufacturer. However, what follows are some of the most popular model train scale sizes in use.

HO Scale

This scale is the most popular scale right now in the English-speaking world including the UK. The exact details of the HO scale are that .14 equates to 1 foot of the real train. This shrinks the replica to a size that will allow for detailing of the train itself and yet fit within a room easily. This appeals to both the detail oriented artisan and modeler, as well as the hobbyist who is limited in space. However there is still a lot of disparity in sizing between manufacturers in Europe and the scales may not be precisely .14 to 1 ft even when labeled HO.

N Scale

The N Scale model trains are one of the more popular very small-scale model sizes. The N scale miniaturizes the trains at a scale of 1:148, which means that 148 inches of the train are scaled down to 1” on the model. These tiny replicas are great for modelers who want to create complex railway layouts and scenes but do not have the space to dedicate. On the other hand, the tradeoff is that these tiny trains will display less detail than larger models due to their reduced sizes and they are more costly than the HO models though less expensive than the G scale (often used for outdoor gardens).

G Scale

In popular terminology the G scale model is also known as the garden scale model (though it is not the official term) and these are usually made for outdoor displays. They allow for fine details in the scenery and the model trains but are generally too large for indoor displays. The most popular maker of this scale of replica trains is LGB known as the Lehmann Gross Bahn. The exact scale varies from European to North American manufacturers. Generally, in Europe the G scale is 1:22.5 while in North America it is 1:20.3. Though the difference might seem small, they can become magnified when working with a garden sized layout and consistency should apply throughout the layout.

The 0 Scale

The 0 Scale is most frequently considered a toy train scale and was popularized by the toymaker Lionel. Some modelers however use a 0-scale train size and run it on a replica track.

Sorting Out Model Train Scale

Model scale is the ratio between the model and prototype. This sounds very simple, but when it comes to model trains it can get very complicated. Let's try to sort out the model train scale of the N, HO, O, and G scale trains. Also, we will look at the gauge of these four scales. Remember gauge and scale are two entirely different things, even though a lot of people seem to interchange with one another.

Looking at the N gauge trains, we find out that the distance between the two rains is nine millimeters. The N in N scale stands for the nine in nine millimeters. But, this is gauge not scale. So now we know what the gauge is, let's look at the scale. The scale of N scale trains is different according to the country the train is being modeled in.  The scale ranges from 1:148 to 1:160, but all run on a nine millimeter track gauge. In the United Kingdom the N scale is built on a ratio 1:148 to the prototype. Whereas, in the United States the N gauge train has a 1:160 scale ratio. The Japan the N gauge has a scale ratio of 1:150 and some modelers in Britain use a scale ratio of 1:152. So, when modeling in N scale always look at the ratio to keep all your train and accessories the correct scale. But, is you mix them up you probably would not know the difference.

The HO scale train has a track gauge of 16.5 millimeters. This scale is the most popular scale model train in the world. When modeling in HO scale you do not have to worry about different ratios, like in the N scale. The HO scale train has a standard ration of 1:87 world-wide.  The HO stands for half of O, which means that the HO scale is approximately one half the sizes of the O scale trains, which we will explore next.

The O scale is different in that it can have a track gauge from 31.75 to 32.64 millimeters. All O gauge trains will run on any of the tracks without any problem. The standard O scale track is considered to be 32 millimeters. Now let's look at the scale of O gauge trains. The scale in the United Kingdom has a ratio of 1:43.5, where, 1:45 is the normal scale ratio in Europe. The United States uses the ratio of 1:48 scale ratio.

Now we take a look at the G scale trains. The only standard in this gauge is the track, having a track gauge of 45 millimeters called (Gauge 1). The scale of the G scale trains is another thing. The gauge is different form manufacturer to manufacturer and from country to country. Wrightway, Accucraft, Aster, Marklin, and MTH manufacturers make their model in a ratio of 1:32. Aristo-Craft and USA Trains "Ultimate" series is 1:29, whereas LGB, Bachmann's "Big Haulers" series and the Gartland Locomotive Works builds their modes in ratio of 1:22.5. Also, there are many more manufacturers and scales. Therefore, the G trains should be called G gauge, with no particular scale. Utilizing G Scale Model Trains

G scale model trains are an amazing piece of engineering. Not only are they the largest of the model trains, they are also the easiest to work with. In case you are not up to date with model train terminology we will talk a bit about the different scales. The first thing you need to know is that model trains are standardized to a point that everyone can use the same equipment.

There was a time when this simply was not so. In the beginning of the model train hobby trains were made of different sizes, shapes, and orientations. If you bought track for one train there was a chance that it would simply fail to work with a different brand. It wasn't long before someone determined there was indeed a need to standardize both the trains and the tracks, making it necessary to assign scales to the trains.

There are many scales, but the G scale stands for Garden Variety. In other words it is very common and it is very large. This type of train is so large in fact that you will rarely see a full scale scenery for it and it is commonly used in outdoor gardens. Something to note about the G scale model trains is that they are nearly impossible to break. This includes exposure to the elements and even children.

If the G scale model train does happen to break you will find that the parts within are extremely large and easy to work with. You can replace the parts or you can repair them if the situation happens to permit. In addition to that, the large size of the train makes it much easier to add DCC control if you so desire.

While there is not much you can do in the way of scenery, you can certainly get creative with your G scale model trains. For instance it would be a good idea to run a track through your house either at floor level or at ceiling level. Many people have actually tried running track through their walls and into the backyard. With elevated tracks and plexiglass barriers to keep the train from falling, these make a great addition to a property for virtually train lover.

As we've stated though, the G scale is very large and should only be used by those who happen to have quite a bit of room. In addition to that the G scale will rarely be seen with a benchwork of it's own. Rather an entire room will become the benchwork for the train, and if that is something you can live with, you might just have a winner.

Question by ace: How to choose Potentiometer/Pot for model train throttle twelve volts DC?
Hi, I am building a throttle for a model train set. I am trying to figure out which type of potentiometer would work for 0-12 volts DC. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

For a DC voltage of 0-12 volts - the perfect potentiometer would be one with 100000 Ohms of resistance. This 100000 Ohm potentiometer would give you the most control over the voltage.
